Background of the Study
Economic diplomacy is a vital tool for managing international trade and resolving disputes between nations. US–EU negotiations serve as a prime example of how diplomatic engagement can help mitigate trade conflicts through dialogue, compromise, and strategic economic incentives (Thompson, 2023). In Abuja, these negotiations have been instrumental in addressing tariff disputes, intellectual property concerns, and regulatory differences that could otherwise escalate into larger conflicts. Economic diplomacy involves a combination of negotiation strategies, trade policy reforms, and multilateral cooperation to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. Through targeted diplomatic efforts, both the United States and the European Union aim to ensure stable market access and promote fair trade practices. However, persistent challenges such as diverging economic priorities, political pressures, and complex regulatory environments can hinder the resolution process (Nguyen, 2024). This study investigates the role of economic diplomacy in mitigating trade disputes by examining US–EU negotiations in Abuja. By analyzing negotiation tactics, policy outcomes, and stakeholder perspectives, the research seeks to offer practical recommendations for improving dispute resolution and enhancing international economic cooperation.
Statement of the problem
Despite ongoing US–EU negotiations, trade disputes continue to surface due to conflicting interests and regulatory mismatches. In Abuja, challenges such as political interference, inconsistent policy implementation, and divergent economic strategies hinder the effectiveness of economic diplomacy (Okoro, 2024). This study seeks to determine whether current diplomatic efforts successfully mitigate trade disputes or if inherent obstacles reduce their overall impact. Understanding these challenges is critical for refining negotiation strategies and achieving more sustainable and mutually beneficial trade relationships.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of US–EU economic diplomacy in mitigating trade disputes in Abuja.
To identify key challenges that hinder dispute resolution.
To recommend strategies for improving negotiation outcomes.
